A breastfeeding resource for New Zealand families
Public health resources are most effective when they speak directly to the people they’re targeting. The best way to do this is to ensure they are built collaboratively with the end users they support, and that they contain content and language that’s tailored to those groups.
HealthShare, an initiative of Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand) worked with local midwives, lactation consultants and families to create the first BreastFedNZ app in 2015. Reach HPI was engaged in 2023 to carry out a ground-up redesign and rebuild of the app, to update and modernise it, and to add a robust and scalable admin dashboard for management of app content.
A resource as diverse as the people it serves
The project team knew it was vital that BreastFedNZ reflected the many and varied people that make up New Zealand society. Reach HPI helped craft a design brief for the project that was used to guide an illustrator in providing artwork for the app.
Reach HPI worked closely with the project illustrator to define a colour palette, to fill the app with diverse artwork, and to ensure that the artistic style was implemented consistently and thoroughly through the app. From painterly, hand-drawn backgrounds, to app icons, pull-out quotes and other flourishes, the result is a beautiful, colourful app in which all users can see themselves reflected.
Simple, remote admin control
In the initial versions of the BreastFedNZ app, it was difficult for project admins to update the content. They wanted to ensure that the new platform made it easy for them to control content remotely, without needing to constantly request changes from the developers, or require users to update the app.
Reach HPI has a lot of experience building remotely configurable systems with admin dashboards accessibly through any browser. We’ve built systems like this for projects such as Beacon, Bright Tomorrows and Milk Man, and we brought this experience to the table in developing a similarly user-friendly system for the BreastFedNZ team.

“Reach HPI were incredible to work with from the beginning. They helped us shape the solution design into something that would be adaptable, beautiful, and robust, all within our financial parameters. Their communication was professional and yet personal throughout the process as they helped our technical and content people navigate getting the best result possible. They delivered to timeframes and delivered well above and beyond what the team had hoped for.”
