A wealth of resources, if you know where to look

Professionals providing alcohol and other drug services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people need up-to-date, culturally appropriate resources. These resources include counselling and referral services, harm reduction groups, residential rehab and withdrawal management. While many Australian organisations provide such services, professionals have often found them difficult to find.

The Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet set out to resolve this issue by creating a comprehensive, easily searchable database, accessed via a new mobile app.

First things first: building on core requirements

AODconnect began with several clear objectives. It needed to make it as easy as possible for professionals to find services that met their specific needs, and operated in the required areas. Effective search and filtering were critical.

For those working in the field, it was critical that AODconnect be usable without a reliable Internet connection, a common issue in remote Australian areas. Finally, it was important that admins could easily update content, with those updates being pushed to devices as soon as they were able to connect. These core requirements informed the design and architecture of the app and remote server.

iOS, Android and a browser-based dashboard

We designed a clean, functional interface featuring commissioned artwork by indigenous artist Pauline Nampijinpa Singleton.

We built native apps for iOS and Android, and a remote server for content. We also built a browser-based admin dashboard for managing app content and services, and provided documentation and training for admin staff.

“AODconnect ensures professionals who require culturally appropriate materials can promptly access what they need. Finding services through a handheld device in the field will also save time. Importantly, once the app is downloaded, it will continue to work even when Internet connection is unreliable or non-existent.”

— Neil Drew, Director, Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet
