Perinatal depression is real, and support is vital
Many new parents experience depression around the birth of their child, and getting the right advice and support is critical. The Western Australia Centre for Perinatal Mental Health & Parenting Support exists to provide exactly that.
WACPPS engaged Reach HPI in 2022 to design and build a new tool to help new parents to better understand their mood and to keep track of lifestyle factors and could influence their mood. It also enabled connection with trusted support people.
Finding patterns, explaining trends
The Support Me app enables parents to track their mood, as well as other external influences on their mood state. This presented an interesting challenge in data analysis and visualisation. How could we take many, many data points, identify trends, and show these to the user in a way they could easily understand and take action on.
Reach HPI developed these algorithms, and designed a beautiful user interface to display trends and insights to users.
Privacy and security first, by design
The data being logged by users was highly sensitive, requiring a privacy-first approach where data were only ever stored on users’ devices, and never transmitted to the app server. However, a critical function of the app was connection with a trusted support person, who would receive alerts if their mental state stayed low for an extended time.
Reach HPI developed a secure system to connect users with their support people, using only the bare minimum of data transmission to necessary to facilitate this function.
